rubbish is an on going photo/moving image project documenting the community that are and were occurring within the Stead Place Building on Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

The community has been threatened with displacement due to property developers coming in with plans of demolition of the building that has been part of the Leith environment for just under one hundred years. All the businesses within the building at the time of start of project served the community and it’s interests positively. Family owned, some had been there for decades. Now most are gone.

At this time of writing the ones that do remain are still fighting for their livelyhoods and community.

An exhibition to highlight the story at the time was installed at St Margaret’s House, Edinburgh. This was produced by Leith community maker innovators Bare Branding

A publication was produced by Edinburgh based publisher Sylvie Docherty. The show was kindly sponsored by Paul Gibson founder of Campervan Brewery.

Thank you to Leith Depot, Leith Walk Cafe, The Leith Bed Shop, Sikh Sanjog, Punjabi Junction, Leith Recording Studio and Johnny the Accountant for opening their doors and welcoming me into the Stead Place building community.

A true example of multi-culturism working and basically get on with it in peace and harmony.
